The story behind the shoot
When the fog showed up instead
Hi everyone! I'm Gerald, the photographer on this shoot. I wanted to share with you how Z and A's proposal turned into something neither of us expected, in the best way. Read on!
What they wanted
Z planned a sunrise proposal at Lake Kawaguchiko, with Mt. Fuji as the backdrop. November mornings give some of the best statistical odds of clear Fuji visibility all year, and that's exactly why he chose the date and the early hour. We scouted the spot together in the days before, picked the angle, and were ready to go right at sunrise.
The challenge
Statistics aren't a guarantee. On the morning itself, there was no Fuji to be seen at all. Just thick fog rolling across the lake. It's a good reminder that even when you plan around the best possible conditions, the weather still gets the final say. We joked that the only way we'd be seeing Fuji that morning was with AI, and Z took it in stride. He and Alyssa were having a great time regardless, fog or no fog.
What actually happened was more interesting than the original plan. The density of the fog, combined with the early sunrise crowd along the shore, created an atmosphere with genuinely beautiful colour. It wasn't what anyone expected walking in, but it gave the morning its own kind of magic.
How we shot it
I shoot that shoreline often enough to have a mental list of angles that work depending on how the light hits the mountain and the water at a given time. That morning, most of that list didn't apply. The fog was unlike anything I'd seen there before, and it meant paying close attention to compositions I wouldn't normally reach for. Some of my usual go-to shots simply weren't working in those conditions. But the fog opened up new ones I hadn't tried at that spot, the way it moved across the water and softened the light in a way that gave the whole set its own atmosphere.
