Cherry blossoms, no crowds, and the right day to wait for
Hi everyone! I'm Gerald, the photographer on this shoot. I wanted to share with you how J and C's proposal came together, from the first conversation about timing to the moment under the blossoms. Read on!
What they wanted
J came with one clear priority: seclusion. Cherry blossoms, yes, but more than anything he wanted a quiet place with no one around. He came to Tokyo from California, and this was going to be a once-in-a-lifetime moment. He did not want strangers in the background. We talked through timing and location, and it became clear that getting the setting right mattered more to him than any particular spot. He was flexible on the date, which turned out to be important.
The challenge
Cherry blossom season in Tokyo is unpredictable. The original booking date was looking too early for peak bloom, so I recommended waiting a few days. J trusted that call. March 28th worked out well. The blossoms were nearly at their peak. The other factor was timing on the morning itself. This garden is extremely quiet when the gates open at 9am. Arrive then and it is just you and a handful of other early visitors. J arrived about fifteen minutes after opening, which was enough time for a few more people to filter in. He was a little flustered when he saw them. I told him: if the spot does not feel right, just walk further into the garden. It is still beautiful, and I will follow.
How we shot it
I was already inside when J and C arrived, walking around and taking photos as if I was there on my own. I even took a few selfies to make sure nobody would look twice. When J moved C further into the garden, away from the small clusters of people, I followed at a distance. There were families around with young children, kids running between the trees and playing. A few of them stopped to watch once J got down on one knee. It was one of those moments where everyone nearby seemed to understand what was happening. After the yes, both of them relaxed completely. They were tender with each other and immediately comfortable with me as well. Playful, open to direction, easy to work with from the first minute. The blossoms were close to peak and the light was good. The rest of the session followed naturally from there.
